Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. 256 Principles of Cybersecurity provides the owner of a domain and a contact person for the domain by querying the ICANN databases. WHOIS lookups are useful to provide the name and com- pany information of a registered domain name. ICANN and IANA, along with others, provide the management, technical support, and standards behind many of the services and protocols used on the Internet. It is common to say a company or person owns a domain name. However, domain names are not owned, rather leased for a period of time. You have the right to renew your lease before it can be offered again for sale. If you forget to renew your domain name, there is a mandatory grace period set by ICANN that works with your registration agent so you can still renew the domain if you miss the deadline. If you fail to renew the domain, it becomes available for others to lease. Oops, not a hack! It happens big companies can forget to renew domain names. The Dallas Cowboys organization forgot in 2010, and its website went blank. A message was displayed on the domain offering the domain for sale!
