Chapter 10 Types of Floral Design 263
20th-Century Designs
The early 1900s were a time of dramatic cultural changes
based on technological advances in both communication
and transportation technology. These changes and others
were refl ected in design styles for everything from clothes
to furniture to fl oral arrangements. The following styles
developed during the 20th century.
Cascade
The Art Nouveau period, which began just before 1900
and lasted into the 1920s, gave rise to several new ideas about
fashion and art. The cascade design style is a direct refl ection
of these new ideas. Cascade designs are line designs that
include a slightly curvilinear line that falls or hangs from a
container. If the arrangement is to be fl oor-standing, a tall
container is needed. However, if the arrangement will fl ow
over the side of a mantel or shelf, any container may be used.
Many fl orists use the term cascade design in reference
to a fl owers-to-carry design with dominant hanging line,

Waterfall
A waterfall design is a cascade design with the addition
of elements that suggest the fl ow of water, Figure 10-21. This
type of design uses descending lines, sometimes intentionally crossed to create
several layers of different, typically sheer materials with delicate texture. They
emphasize depth and create a fl owing effect, frequently incorporating materials
such as shells, wired beads, buttons, or various other elements of interest. This
design style is highly technical and best achieved by an experience designer.

beautiful and memorable impression as a bridal
bouquet. There is no set limit to the length of
the bouquet and some are made to fl ow as
long as the bridal gown’s hem.

replicates the natural waterfall, yet is void of the usual layers of materials to produce the refi ned waterfall design style.
