12 Principles of Floral Design
Event Florist
Large commercial events require fl orists with the ability and equipment
to assist with décor. Event fl orists, sometimes called studio fl orists, are
designers who coordinate an overall look or design for clients based on a
suggested theme. They work with catering companies, wedding planners,
rental companies, and a variety of clients to achieve the desired effects. Event
fl orists typically have a work space, or studio, and are available to meet with
clients by appointment. They understand not only the art of fl oral design,
but also the environmental settings needed for small or large venues. Their
strong understanding of spatial relationship and scale helps them provide the
most effective application of a thematic style to any event.
Caterer
Floral designers may also nd employment with a catering company.
Caterers frequently include centerpieces and fl oral accents on their
tablescapes or food buffets, Figure 1-12. Serving trays and dinner and buffet
tables are frequently decorated with fl oral materials. Like a fl oral designer,
a good caterer knows how to use the principles and elements of design to
present products in a visually exciting manner. If you enjoy both fl owers
and food and have a passion for visual display, you may nd a fulfi lling job
within the catering business.
Online and Wire Service Florists
With the invention of the Internet, fl orists also participate in online
order lling. A customer can see designs for sale and order them via
a website for delivery without verbally communicating with a fl orist.
