Because a fl oral designer is often asked about fl owering annuals used in exterior displays, or may have an opportunity to use them in an exhibit or event, some of the familiar fl owering annuals have also been included in this glossary. The fl owers are alphabetized by their botanical name and include the common name used most frequently in the profession and regional locales. The major focus of the botanical names is on the genus name without a specifi c epithet. Professional fl orists often use the botanical name as a common name so it is benefi cial to learn both. When used in print, the common name is not italicized. The terms botanical name and scientifi c name may sometimes be used interchangeably.
