Exploring Careers Chief Executive Officer In most businesses, the chief executive officer (CEO) is the person in charge. They hold the highest position within an organization and often have the most authority. CEOs are responsible for creating strategies and policies for a business as a whole. They collaborate with and direct the work of other top executives, such as chief financial officers. Their main responsibility is providing the overall direction of an organization established by a company’s board of directors. Typical job titles for this position include chief executive, managing director, executive director, and president. Examples of tasks that chief executive officers perform include: managing and analyzing company operations appointing department heads and managers working closely with the board of directors and formulating and implementing policies. A chief executive officer position requires a bachelor degree however, a postgraduate degree may be required. CEOs must have effective leadership and communication skills as well as strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
