Communication Skills Speaking. Circumlocution is the use of many words to convey an idea when fewer would do. It can be used to communicate an idea when the exact word is not known. For example, suppose you do not know the word “democracy.” Instead, you say, “the form of government in which each person has a say.” Use circumlocution to describe to a classmate how to establish goals without using the word “goal.” Was your classmate able to determine your meaning? Listening. Informative listening is the process of listening to gain specific information or instructions from the speaker. Ask a classmate to give you directions to the school cafeteria.
