Preface
The key to success for any construction or renovation project is the ability of trades-
people to effectively and effi ciently read, interpret, and understand written instructions
and guidelines. Print Reading for HVACR provides students with the foundation for
learning these key skills to later excel in the HVACR fi eld. To aid in the learning process, a
set of professional Large Prints accompany the text that aligns with the chapter material
and exercises to give the reader applicable, on-the-job HVAC experiences.
As an HVACR professional with over 40 years in the HVACR industry, I wrote this
text as a comprehensive guide that provides the student with the tools required to read
and understand project plans, prints, tables, and charts, while gaining insight into the
methods used to create such drawings. Print Reading for HVACR is a valuable resource to
those just starting to learn about print reading, as well as those with previous knowledge
in the subject area. The information in this book has been organized in a logical, progres-
sive format, allowing the reader to work through the content at an appropriate, individu-
alized pace. Throughout the book, the reader will encounter a feature titled “Between the
Lines,” which offers best practices and applicable insight on the subject matter.
Each chapter starts with a list of objectives that outlines what the student can expect
to learn in the pages that follow and concludes with a detailed summary of the material
covered. End-of-chapter review questions are also presented in three different formats
pertaining to a specifi c level of Bloom’s taxonomy. “Know and Understand” questions
evaluate the level of the reader’s retained knowledge from the chapter. “Analyze and
Apply” questions provide the reader with the opportunity to demonstrate a deeper level
of understanding of the concepts covered in the chapter. When appropriate, these ques-
tions require the reader to perform calculations and reach conclusions about the chapter
content. “Critical Thinking” questions provide the reader with challenging, open-ended
questions that encourage subjective responses to print-related topics and elements.
Select chapters also offer “Practice Using Large Prints” exercises, which provide
opportunities for the reader to manipulate and draw information from the Large Prints
provided with the text. These exercises strive to help students complete real-world exer-
cises that are performed on a regular basis when working with job prints.
I truly hope that you enjoy reading and learning from this book as much as I have
enjoyed writing it.
