Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Chapter 1 Professional Communication 21 Review and Assessment 1 9. Explain why paralanguage is considered a form of nonverbal communication even though it involves use of the voice. 10. Give an example of a sending barrier that can occur with face-to-face communication. Apply Your Knowledge 1. Each form of professional communi- cation has its own purpose or intent. Language must always be adapted for the needs of the audience. Create a table with three columns. In the first column, list the four purposes for communicat- ing: inform, persuade, request, and direct. In the second column, give a brief description of each. In the last column, give an example of each purpose. Use this table as a reference as you commu- nicate for professional purposes. 2. Initiate an informal conversation with a classmate or an instructor. When the communication process is complete, note each step. Who are the sender and the receiver? What is the message? What channel was used? Was the mes- sage translated and how do you know? Receiving feedback signifies whether the communication process was successful. Analyze each step of the communication process to evaluate whether the commu- nication was clear and appropriate. 3. An important part of the communica- tion process is applying communication management skills to recognize the appropriate channel of communication in your organization. Following proto- col will help you identify standards for making appropriate communication choices. Identify which channel of com- munication (letter, memo, formal e-mail, phone call) should be used for the fol- lowing situations and why. A. Asking a colleague where to find information about a company policy. B. Confirming a meeting time. C. Writing a summary of minutes from a meeting. D. Forwarding information to a client. 4. Channels of communication in the workplace are typically formal or infor- mal. Make a list of three ways you, as an employee, would communicate with someone in the workplace who was higher in rank than you. For each chan- nel, write the type of communication and why you chose it. Next, make a list of three ways you would communicate in the workplace with someone who was lower in rank with you. For each chan- nel, write the type of communication and why you chose it. 5. Informal communication generally takes place between friends or peers in a work environment. It does not require following protocol the way formal com- munication with managers requires. Analyze the standards of informal com- munication and professional etiquette as they should be applied in the workplace. Make a list of the protocol you would suggest for talking with peers. 6. Nonverbal communication is important in the workplace. Making eye contact, shaking hands, and respecting others’ personal space are strategies that are important when conducting business. Make a list of reasons why you think each of these behaviors is important. What effect does each of these nonverbal communications send? 7. Make a list of five careers in the Arts, A/V Technology & Communications cluster. Next to each career, indicate which channel of communication is used primarily by each career. For example, an actor might use face-to-face conversation to convey his or her mes- sage to the audience.
