83 Section 4.1 Sentences Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Subjects and Predicates A sentence has two main parts: a subject and a predicate. The subject is the person speaking or the person, place, or thing the sentence describes. The predicate describes an action or a state of being for the subject. Subjects Nouns and pronouns are discussed in detail later in this chapter. Both nouns and pronouns can serve as the subject of a sentence. Consider this sentence. Anne will sing.
