There are many types of accessories available that may make a computer workstation more ergonomic, including wrist rests, specially designed chairs, and back supports. In addition, Figure 11-3 identifi es a few things the employee can do to create a comfortable environment and help prevent injury or strain to the body. Eyes Position the computer monitor to minimize glare from overhead lights, windows, and other light sources. Reduce light intensity by turning off some lights or closing blinds and shades. Images on the computer screen should be seen clearly without glare. Move the monitor so that it is 18 to 30 inches away from your eyes— this is about the distance of an arm’s length. To help reduce eyestrain, employees should look away from the monitor every 15 to 20 minutes and focus on an object at least 20 feet away for one to two minutes. Wrists and Arms Forearms should be parallel to the fl oor. Employees should periodically stretch their arms, wrists, and shoulders. It is suggested that an ergonomic keyboard and mouse be used. This type of keyboard keeps the wrists in a normal body position. An ergonomic mouse fi ts the hand more comfortably.
