Chapter 3 Nonstore Retail Operations 69 Coach Apply Your Strengths and Weaknesses When it comes to your schoolwork, what types of things do you like to do? What are you good at? DECA’s competitive events offer you the opportunity to write, make oral presentations, take tests, make quick decisions, supervise and plan, manage your time, complete projects, and even help people out in the community. The odds are that there are one or more things on this list that either interest you or that you are good at. There is also a possibility that the list includes something you do not particularly like to do, and that is okay. For example, if taking a test makes you nervous, look for an event that does not require you to take a test. If you are interested in an event that allows or requires you to form a team, select a teammate that has some of the talents that you do not. For example, you may prefer expressing yourself more in writing. If you select a partner who is more outgoing and good with public speaking, this opens the door for you to enter competitions that you might not otherwise be comfortable entering. Each teammate can lend his or her talents to the team. Finally, select a topic. Many of the events let you pick your topic, so pick something that you and your teammates are interested in. Whether it is sports, fashion, cars, electronic gadgets, animals, or helping others, be interested in your topic. Combining your interests with your talents, as well as the talents of your teammates, is a winning combination. Visit www.deca.org to learn more information about DECA.
