Chapter 1 Making the Transition from School to Career
You and your peers will likely work in 10 or more jobs for 5 or
more employers before retirement. Some of the occupations you
will hold may not exist today. This means it is your responsibility to
manage your own career and watch for new opportunities.
Keep career flexibility in mind as you explore various occupations
and careers. Success in the workplace requires self-reliance, adaptability,
transferable skills, and the willingness and ability to learn new skills.
Career Clusters
One of the best ways to learn about careers is by studying the
career clusters, the groups of occupational and career specialties as
shown in Figure 1-5. The clusters and career pathways were developed
by educators, employers, and professional groups. These experts
carefully examined what students must know to explore educational
opportunities and be better prepared for college and career success.
