Computer-Aided Drafter
What Does a Computer-Aided Drafter Do?
Computer-aided drafters prepare technical drawings used by construction
workers to build commercial and residential buildings. Most drafters use computer-
aided design and drafting (CAD) software to prepare their drawings. Computer-aided
drafters are often referred to as CAD operators. A computer-aided drafter must:
make detailed drawings such as floor plans, wall sections and exterior
views, and may be involved in the design process;
be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and
have strong math and engineering skills.
What Is It Like to Work as a Computer-
Aided Drafter?
Computer-aided drafters work closely with architects to help transform
their ideas into reality. They may also interact with clients. Drafters spend
many hours at the computer and are subject to eye and back strain as well
as hand and wrist problems.
What Education and Skills Are Needed
to Be a Computer-Aided Drafter?
high school diploma or GED
post-secondary training in drafting is preferred
coursework in math, science, engineering, and CAD
strong critical thinking and interpersonal skills
time-management skills
