Common Core
Speaking. Working in small groups, develop a list of rules that
you would like to have in your classroom and your reasoning
for each one. Develop a presentation in which you attempt to
persuade your classmates to adopt your regulations. Then,
develop a separate presentation in which you attempt to
persuade your teacher, acting as a member of the school
board, to adopt your regulations. How will you alter your
presentations for the two different audiences?
Listening. Research the positives and negatives of taking part in work-
based learning. Using the Internet, find video footage that discusses work-
based learning. Compare and contrast the speakers’ information, points of
view, and opinions. How are they similar and different? Using the information
presented, create a list of positives and negatives that you might encounter
when taking part in a work-based learning program.

Portfolio
A portfolio can contain different items, depending on the purpose
for the portfolio. The same or similar items could be included in
a portfolio that you use in applying to a college or for a job. For
example, you could include school transcripts, diplomas, and
awards. If you are applying for a community service position, you
may want to include a variety of items. For example, you might
want to include letters from teachers or youth group leaders
explaining how you are qualified for a position.
A checklist can be helpful as you complete work on your portfolio. Do
research and then create your own checklist.
1. Search the Internet for articles that discuss items to include in a
portfolio.
2. Create a checklist to use as an ongoing reference as you create
your portfolio. Note items that will be helpful when applying for a
job, to a college, or for a community service position.
