Some graphic marks can be used without being formally registered, as shown in Figure 15-1. License Agreement A licensing agreement is a contract that gives one party permission to market, produce, or use the product or service owned by another party. The agreement grants a license in return for a fee or royalty payment. When buying software, the purchaser agrees to follow the terms of a license. A license is the legal permission to use a software program. All software has terms of use that explain how and when the software may be used. Figure 15-2 explains the characteristics of different software licensing. Alternative usage rights for software programs are typically covered by the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL). The GNU GPL guarantees all users the freedom to use, study, share, and modify the software. The term open source applies to software that has had its source code made available to the public at no charge. Open-source software can be downloaded and used for free and can be modifi ed and distributed by anyone. However, part or all of the code of open- source software may be owned by an individual or organization. Figure 15-1.
