Wi-Fi Survey A Wi-Fi survey is a service that combines a predictive survey with analysis by a network engineer to determine what is needed to deploy a wireless network at a given location. Often, Wi-Fi surveys are conducted using Wi-Fi analyzers, which are devices used to locate wireless signals and signal strength in physical locations. Figure 14-4 displays the results of the Wi-Fi Analyzer App for Windows displayed in a graph. Notice that the Wi-Fi channels are included below each chart. Wireless Access Point A wireless access point (WAP), also known as an access point (AP), is a networking device that provides access to a connection between a wireless network and a phys- ical cable-based network. Wireless security can be managed well, provided AP set- tings are configured correctly and placement was carefully considered. If a wireless network’s range extends beyond the company’s physical boundaries, this could make it easier for attackers to attempt to gain access. One of the first steps in securing a wireless network is choosing the best type of AP to match the needs of the network. Depending on the deployment method and network architecture, an administrator has a number of options from which to choose when determining the correct type of access point. Each type of access point provides a unique set of security measures, and the needs of a network determine which type of AP to install. Securing the wireless access points in a network, particularly stand-alone access points, is an essential protection mechanism to prevent unwanted access.
