Key Terms
Another important part of caring for the environment involves
using energy wisely. Energy could be defi ned as something that gives a
machine the power to perform an action. There are many different kinds
of energy: light energy, heat energy, and electrical energy. Energy can be
stored. The energy stored in gasoline is harnessed when an engine burns
it. Energy stored in batteries can power tools and appliances.
People have many ways to supplement their own physical energy
with energy from other sources. For example, they burn gasoline to run
their cars, thereby saving the energy of walking or pedaling a bicycle.
They use electricity to run a clothes washer, thereby saving the labor of
washing clothes by hand. People also use energy to heat and light their
homes and run household equipment. See 5-6. There are two major
sources of energy—nonrenewable and renewable.
