Summary
As a citizen, you have a responsibility
to be informed, vote, and obey laws. You
also have a responsibility to pay taxes and
protect the environment. Performing these
tasks will help you protect your personal
and legal rights. Volunteering allows you
to give back to your community. It can also
help you gain experience and friendships
that will be benefi cial in getting a job in
the future.
A healthful environment is one that
promotes good physical and mental
health and allows people to reach their
goals. Pollution and other environmental
problems are concerns that directly affect
everyone’s health. Each person must
assume a responsibility for protecting the
environment that supports all living things.
Conserving energy is an aspect of
caring for the environment. By using less
energy, the fossil fuels are spared. Every
person must be willing to do his or her part.
Knowing conservation issues helps people
make energy-saving practices a habit.
1. Analyze priorities. What rights do
you value most as a citizen? What
responsibilities can you fulfi ll to help
protect those rights?
2. Judge actions. Write a brief reaction
to this statement: taxes should be
abolished.
3. Draw conclusions. Why should
protecting the environment be a global
effort rather than a local effort? Give at
least three reasons in your explanation.
Chapter 5 Review
4. Predict outcomes. Which of the
nonrenewable energy resources do
you think the global community should
try hardest to conserve? Which of the
renewable energy resources do you
think is most reliable?
5. Math. Figure local sales tax on prices
for several different items available at a
retail store in your area.
6. Social studies. Research ways
citizens can fulfi ll roles as leaders
in your community. Develop a list of
leadership opportunities.

description of a healthful environment.
What factors are included? What

8. Science. Research one of the
nonrenewable resources to learn how
it is formed, where it is found, and what
has been done to preserve it. Can
anything be used as a substitute for
this resource?
9. Science. Research the use of wind
energy in the world. Where is the
largest wind-energy farm located
in the United States? in the world?
Report the number and size of the
wind generators used in both locations
as well as the amount of electricity
produced.
