While some people are not born with good health, everyone wants
to be healthy. Most people know good health means more than merely
being free from disease. A concept known as wellness describes a desired
state of health. Physical wellness means the body is able to fi ght illness
and infection and repair damage. This state of health makes you feel and
look better. It gives you energy to do your daily tasks and helps you enjoy
life more fully. Only a small percentage of people currently enjoy this level
of good health. However, attaining physical wellness is a worthy goal
that all people should try to achieve.
Two key factors can help you achieve physical wellness. First, you
need professional medical care. This includes preventive health care with
regular checkups and any needed emergency treatment. Second, you need
self-care. This means meeting your body’s needs through good nutrition
and weight management. It also means getting enough physical activity
and rest as well as learning to manage stress. Finally, self-care includes
grooming and personal hygiene.
Physical fi tness refers to the condition of your body. When you are
physically fi t, your muscles are toned, your heart is strong, and your
lungs are clear. You are able to perform a variety of tasks.
Fitness and wellness go hand in hand. You cannot be healthy if your
body is not strong. Likewise, you cannot keep your body strong if you
are not healthy.
Many factors play a role in determining your state of physical wellness
and physical fi tness. However, the care you give yourself has the greatest
impact on both areas of your well-being. You need to assume responsibility
for your health and fi tness.
