Tobacco
Cigarette smoking is the largest preventable cause of illness and
premature death in the United States. Many thousands of deaths each
year are linked to cigarette smoking. People who smoke are more likely
to suffer from heart disease, respiratory infections, and lung cancer.
Smoking during pregnancy can be harmful to the unborn child.
Pregnant women who smoke have a higher risk of miscarriage and
premature delivery. Babies born to women who smoke often weigh less,
and their future growth and development may be impaired.
