teen, you may have no job
experience to report. If so,
focus on your volunteer
activities as well as your
interests and abilities.
Make sure your résumé
is free of spelling and
grammar errors.
Provide references
upon request. References
are people who know you
well and can vouch for
your good work. Have
at least three references
ready to give to employers.
The list should include
their names, titles, work
addresses, phone numbers,
and e-mail addresses.
Be sure to acquire each
person’s permission before
adding his or her name to
your list.
For your references,
select people who
are respected in the
community. Teachers,
counselors, employers,
and religious leaders
are ideal choices. Never
name family members or
personal friends since their opinions may be viewed as biased.
Omit information that is personal and has no bearing on your
qualifi cations for the job. This includes your race, ethnic background,
religion, gender, marital status, and disabilities. Equal opportunity laws
prohibit employers from considering these facts in deciding whom to
hire.
Wait at least 7 to 10 business days after you send your résumé to see
if you receive a call from the company. If you do not, you may want to
call to underscore your job interest.
Applying Online
Most companies today request applicants to submit their résumés
electronically instead of by mail. This is especially true when a company
