Chapter 3 Understanding Human Development 67
Why should you, as a future teacher, learn about developmental theo-
ries? While these are theories, not proven facts, they can be very useful.
They can help you better understand what students are capable of doing
and why. Instead of relying only on your own limited personal experi-
ences and observations, understanding developmental theories will give
you a broader picture. This knowledge can make you a better teacher.
The developmental theories summarized in this chapter are just a brief
overview of the many that exist. However, they are ones that have had a
real infl uence on teachers and teaching. As you read about them, evaluate
how their conclusions match your own life experiences, and think about
their potential impact in the classroom.
Heredity Versus Environment
The most basic debate about infl uences on development is that of the
relative importance of heredity versus environment. Consider two class-
mates sitting in class waiting for their turn to read aloud. Andre is shy and
reserved. He is nervous about reading in front of the class. His classmate
Bryson is bursting with energy and can hardly wait for his turn to read.
