Chapter 7 Middle Childhood: Growth and Development
develop to get along well with peers for the
following age groups: five to seven, eight
to nine, and 10 to 12. Identify strategies a
teacher might use to help promote two of
these skills for each age group. Discuss
your groups’ suggestions with the class.
Which strategies does the class think will
work better than others? Why?
22. Technology application. Use a school-
approved web-based application to create
a growth and development digital-photo
collage of someone you (with the person’s
permission) know from age five to about
age 18. What factors may have affected
the visible growth and development
changes? What invisible changes do
you assume? Post your digital collage to
the class web page. Do your classmates
agree or disagree with your assumptions?
Why or why not?
23. CTE College and career readiness
practice. Suppose a group of preteens
in your school is displaying strong terror
of rejection and poor self-concepts. Your
department head has asked your teaching
team to come up with ways to reduce
this terror of rejection and encourage
development of positive self-concepts. Your
first effort to creatively solve the problem
is to ask questions. Create a mind map
like the following to dig deeper into this
problem. Then share your team’s thinking
with your department head (your teacher).

College and Career Portfolio
Community service is an important quality for potential teaching
candidates. Serving the community shows you are a well-rounded
person who is socially aware. Create a list of nonprofit organizations
in your community that may relate to children and teaching. Choose a
place or project that interests you and volunteer to serve. As part of your
community service, begin a list of your community-service activities.
Remember, this is an ongoing project. Plan to update your list when
you have new activities to add. Use the following guidelines to
formulate your list:
List the service projects or volunteer activities in which you
take part. Name the organization or leader, the dates of
service, and the activities you performed. If you received
an award or certificate, mention it here.
Give the document an appropriate name, using the
naming system you created earlier. Place the file in your
e-portfolio.
Put a print copy of the list in the container for your print
portfolio.
