Observe Your Teachers
Take the opportunity to observe your teachers (Figure 2.1). It is your
chance to see how a variety of teachers work. Notice how they interact
with students. What are their particular teaching styles? How do they
adapt material for different levels or interests? What are their class rules
and procedures? How do individual teachers earn the respect of their
students? Be sure to note your observations for future reference.
Utilize your own teachers as resources about teaching. Ask what led
them to teaching and their specific career paths. What advice would they
give to someone interested in the profession? Most will be happy to share
their knowledge and experiences with you.
Explore College Programs
Begin now to gather information about colleges and universities
that offer teacher training, or teacher education programs (or
teacher preparation programs). Many schools have such programs,
but some are more highly regarded than others. Your high school
guidance staff can be an excellent source of information. Ask your
