Chapter 2 Becoming a Teacher
Getting Started
Now that you have seen the big picture, where do you begin in your
quest to become a teacher? Taking the class you are in is your best guide
to exploring the teaching field. Observe what you see around you. Look
for examples of effective teaching and learning. Take advantage of every
opportunity for learning and gain experience working with different age
groups.
There are several other keys to beginning the path toward teaching:
defining your career goal, creating a personal portfolio, and developing
a philosophy of teaching. Together these will help you get started on the
path to a successful teaching career.
Set a Career Goal
Dreams rely on chance. Goals take concerted effort (Figure 2.5). Your
life’s dreams, however, can become your life’s goals. How can you make
your dream of becoming a teacher—and others—reality?
Figure 2.5 You have many other goals to consider when setting your
career goal.
