write your initial philosophy of teaching
statement in two or three paragraphs. Ask
your teacher for feedback, and then revise
your statement. Save your philosophy of
teaching statement in your College and
Career Portfolio and review or revise it
periodically throughout this course.
21. CTE College and career readiness
practice. You have almost decided
that teaching is the career for you.
After researching the educational
requirements, you think it is a good fit with
your personal and career goals. You feel,
however, you are missing the first-hand
experiences needed to totally commit to
teaching. Locate a teacher at a school in
your area who is an expert in the area you
want to teach. Arrange to job shadow or
work with this person as a mentor while
pursuing your career. How can you benefit
by having such a mentor in your life?
College and Career Portfolio
Before beginning to collect information for your portfolio, it is helpful
to know the components to include in your portfolio. It is also important to
identify the clear purpose of your portfolio and write an objective for what
you want to accomplish.
A. Create your checklist to use an ongoing reference as you create your
portfolio throughout this class. Follow the guidelines on pages 50–51
of the text to formulate your list.
B. Decide on the purpose of your portfolio. Are you creating a portfolio
for temporary or short-term employment, a career, and/or college
application?
C. Conduct research on the Internet to locate articles about writing
objectives. Also, look for articles that contain sample objectives for
creating a portfolio.
D. Write an objective for creating your portfolio to use in applying
for a job or to a college. Include statements for both a print
portfolio and an e-portfolio.
