Chapter 1 The Teaching Profession 7 Although being a student may have drawn you to teaching, sitting on the “other side of the desk” may be a far different reality than your expectations. You may wonder if you are up to the challenge. Can you manage a classroom full of students? Should you pursue a job with higher pay? Does the responsibility of the position con- cern you? This class can help you to assess whether teaching is the right career for you. You will learn about some aspects of teaching that you may not have considered have opportunities to try some of the tasks associated with teaching and observe teachers and students. You may also take part in activities with children of various ages. Increasing knowledge, experience, and insight into your own goals and aptitudes better enables you to make an effective career decision. Personal Qualities of Effective Teachers Think about the teachers you have had throughout your education. Which were your favorites? Which ones taught you the most? What was it about these teachers that made them successful? Most likely, your favor- ite teachers were not all alike. Effective teachers come in many forms— some may be outgoing and dramatic while others are demanding and firm, soft-spoken and reflective, or reserved and quiet. Their approaches to life can differ greatly, too. Although teachers may vary, effective teaching requires a common set of personal qualities. Effective teachers are able to motivate, inspire, and influence their students, as well as convey their own enthusiasm for learn- ing. They communicate well with both students and adults. In addition, effective teachers strategically organize and manage the planning, record keeping, and many administrative tasks that go along with the career. While there are many other essential skills, these are some of the most basic. Effective teachers have many personal qualities in common, as well.
