You as a Designer The person who plans how a product will work, what it will look like, which materials will be used in its construction, ensures it is safe to use, and how it will be packaged is called a designer. Designers determine how a product will work, what it will look like, and which materials will be used in its construction. They ensure that the product is safe to use, and design the packaging. Some designers work on buildings (architects) and some on clothing (fashion designers). The Internet is fi lled with pages created by web designers. There are furniture designers and hair stylists. Some graphic designers work on packaging while others focus on magazine layout and illustration (Figure 3-6). Other graphic designers specialize in book covers. You may think of designing as something only professionals do, but everyone can and does design. If you have sketched a futuristic city, planned and built a skateboard ramp, decorated cupcakes that you baked, or built an original vehicle using a construction kit, then you have worked as a designer. Services are also designed. For example, to ensure that you receive your food quickly at a fast-food restaurant, someone designed a menu that allows you to choose your meal items quickly. There is a carefully planned ordering and delivery system to ensure the restaurant always has enough ingredients, wrapping materials, cups, and napkins. A designer planned the layout of the refrigerators, countertops, ovens, and sinks (Figure 3-7). Pause for Thought Which products could be redesigned to make your life less stressful?
