Chapter 3 What Are Design and Designing? 63 CHAPTER 3 Review and Assessment Summary All of the products and services in the made world have, at some point in time, been designed. All products and services are designed to serve a specifi c purpose and use materials in their manufacture and operation. The term design can be used as a noun to describe a fi nished product, and as a verb to describe an activity or to describe a process that begins with identifying a need and ends with a product. People have a wide range of needs that can be met through design. Designers create and carry out plans for new products and structures. Everyone has the ability to design. Good design is functional, user-centered, ergonomically effi cient, affordable, environmentally sustainable, well-made and long lasting, socially responsible, and aesthetically pleasing. Poor design can be dangerous and create user frustration. Iconic designs are aesthetically pleasing, inspire other designers, remain popular for a long time, and become an important part of design history. Design, invention, and innovation each have distinct meanings.
