The educational requirements for this career. C. What someone with this career does on a daily basis. D. The possibilities for promotion to a higher level. E. The earning potential for someone with this career. Look for this information on the Internet or in a library. If possible, interview a person who already works in this career to provide information on the five points. Finally, describe why you might or might not be interested in pursuing this career when you finish school. Critical Thinking 1. Select one product you use every day. Describe the ways in which it contributes to your enjoyment, safety, health, or other aspect of your daily life. In what ways could the product be improved? 2. Describe one product used in your home that has a negative impact on the environment. Describe this impact. In what ways could the product be redesigned so that its impact on the environment is reduced? 3. Make a list of all the products in your home that you or a member of your family has designed. Evaluate each product using the eight characteristics of good design. List ways in which some of the products could be improved. Communicating about Engineering 1. Are you more interested in appearance than function when you buy a new product? Why? Now that you know more about the characteristics of good design, has that changed your mind about what is important when buying something new? 2. Many different design versions of the same product are often available to consumers. Why do you think this is important? Discuss your thoughts with your classmates. STEM Applications 1. Engineering. Work with a team of four other students. Brainstorm ideas for a product that will make one task easier for a person with a special need. Use the principles of good design to build the device. Demonstrate your design in class and ask for comments and suggestions. Document your design and any changes you make.
