Chapter 2 Character Composition
In teams as assigned by your instructor, brainstorm ideas for a character.
Prepare a PowerPoint presentation of up to ten slides (fi
ve to seven minutes)
to present to the class explaining the character, describe its motivation, and
show ideas for the appearance of the character. Include text, pictures, video,
animations, slide transitions, and sound effects as appropriate to help explain
your positions.
Your instructor may provide you with a checklist of components that should
be included in your portfolio. If not, create a checklist that works best for you.
Before you begin collecting information for your portfolio, write an objective
related to creating the portfolio. An objective is a complete sentence or two
that states what you want to accomplish. It should contain enough detail so
that you can easily judge when it is accomplished, such as “I will complete one
completed character sketch for each week of class.” Creating a clear objective is
a good starting point for beginning work on your portfolio.
1. Create a checklist to use as an ongoing reference as you create your
portfolio throughout this class.
2. Decide on the purpose of the portfolio you are creating—temporary or
short-term employment, career, or college application.
3. Do research on the Internet to fi
nd articles about writing objectives.
look for articles that contain sample objectives for creating a portfolio.
4. Write an objective for creating your portfolio that will be used applying
for a job or to a college. Include objectives for both a print portfolio and an
e-portfolio.o.

Using the Internet, research the advice that experts have
for people who want to become video game designers. Make
sure to look at, among other sources, newspaper and magazine
articles, scholarly reports, and public addresses from prominent video game designers. Write a fi

sources that you used and the strengths and weaknesses of each. Be sure to

dimensional modeling software that is available. Compile information about the
benefi
ts and other aspects of each software, such as how easy it is to use, what
image types your work can be saved in, and the cost. Use this information,
along with what you already know about 3D modeling software, to analyze
which software would be best suited to your needs. Using various elements
(visual displays,
written handouts, technological displays), present your choice
to the class. Explain why you chose the software you did.
Creating a computer game is a competitive event that may be offered
by your Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO). This may be an
individual or team event. There may be two parts to this event: the prejudged
program and the performance portion. The event calls for the development of
a computer game as outlined by the organization. The topic will be detailed on
the organization’s website. Students are given an opportunity to create a game
that shows creativity, programming skills, and meets the defi
nition of a video
game. To prepare for creating a game:
1. Read the guidelines provided by your organization. Visit the organization
website early in the school year so you will have plenty of time to create
your game. Make certain that you ask any questions about points that you
do not understand immediately after you review the guidelines.
2. Create a checklist of the guidelines for the event.
3. There will be specifi
c directions given as to the topic how the game should
be created and presented to the judges. The prejudged portion of game
creation will be submitted before the competition. Read the submission
rules for the date, number of copies, and so on. These rules must be
followed in order to qualify for the event.
4. The organization may specify a programming language or game engine to
use or leave it to the participant’s choice. Make certain you are clear on
what can be used before beginning the process.
