Chapter 4 Perspective, Scene Design, and Basic Animation
CASE STUDY
Disney Animation
Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson recorded
the 12 Principles of Animation in their
book Disney Animation: The Illusion of
Life in 1981. The authors were two of Walt
Disney’s Nine Old Men that were the core
group of animators that began working at
Disney from 1927 through 1935.
Disney animators laid the groundwork for animation in the early to mid-twentieth century. The principles they
developed are still valid in today’s video game animation.

The book contained a huge collection of
animations and became known as the
Bible of Animation. The book details the
physics involved in simulating real life
through animation. By applying the first
11 of the 12 principles of animation, an
artist could create realist movement for
characters.
