184 3. Social Science. Conduct research to fi nd an example of an accident or disaster that took place because a weld failed. Write an evaluation of the incident that explains the probable cause of the failure. Also, report on any solutions that were put into place to correct the problem. Include a summary of potential solutions and give your opinion on what is the best and most workable solution. Communicating about Welding 1. Speaking. Obtain two pictures of SMAW welds made in the fl at welding position. One picture should be a weld done correctly, and the other should be a weld done incorrectly. Diagnose what went wrong with the bad weld. Be prepared to explain to the class your fi ndings for both pictures. 2. Reading and Writing. Working with a partner, research the importance of arc length, travel angle, and work angle. Compile research and speak to your teacher about how professionals develop their skills. Write a paper with your partner about the importance of proper welding technique, what can go wrong, and how to prevent mistakes. 3. Speaking and Writing. Pick fi ve to ten of the technical terms presented at the beginning of the chapter. Write a brief scene in which those terms are used as you imagine they would be used by welding professionals in a real- life context. Then rewrite the dialogue using simpler sentences and transitions, as if an adult were describing the same scene to elementary or middle-school students. Read both scenes to the class and ask for feedback on whether the two scenes were appropriate for their audiences. Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc.
