The electrode angles for welding a fillet weld on a lap joint in the flat welding position are shown in Figure 12-17 in the text. 8. Make two weldments like the one shown in step 5. Remember to read the weld at all times and change the amperage, welding speed, electrode angles, and arc length as necessary to make good fillet welds. 9. Clean the weld beads with a chipping hammer and wire brush. Always wear approved chipping goggles when chipping or wire brushing a weld bead. CAUTION Inspection The weld beads must be convex and straight, with evenly spaced ripples. Both legs of the fillet weld should be 1/4″ (6 mm). There should be no evidence of undercut or overlap. The weld beads should be well fused into the base metal.
