Name ________________________________________________________________ Date ________________________ Class ________________ Assigned Job 12-4 Welding a V-Groove Outside Corner Joint in the Flat Welding Position OBJECTIVE: You will learn to make an acceptable V-groove weld on an outside corner joint in the flat welding position. This weld is similar in many respects to a V-groove butt joint. Do not attempt this job until: •• You have read all safety precautions. •• You have satisfactorily completed the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Safety Test. You have received permission from your instructor. NOTE 1. Obtain four pieces of low-carbon steel that measure 1/4″ × 1 1/2″ × 6″ (3 mm × 40 mm × 150 mm). Also, obtain six 1/8″ diameter E6010 electrodes. 2. Answer the following questions before welding: A. What amperage range is suggested for a 1/8″ (3 mm) diameter E6010 electrode? Refer to Figure 11-9 in the text. _ ________________________________________ amperes B. What polarity is suggested for this electrode? Refer to Figure 11-6 in the text. _ ________________________________________________ 3. Set the machine amperage at the middle of the suggested amperage range. Also, set the correct polarity. 4. Make a few practice weld beads. Read the weld beads and set the machine for the best results. 5. Arrange the pieces as shown in the following illustration. Tack weld each joint in three places. SMAW 4 places 6. See Figures 12-9 and 12-10 in the text for the correct electrode angle to use when making a weld on a butt joint in the flat welding position. 7. Weld each joint as indicated in the drawing for step 5. As the weld is made, a keyhole must be present at all times. The keyhole ensures that the weld will have 100% penetration to the root of the weld. 8. Clean each bead by chipping and wire brushing. Always wear chipping goggles when chipping or wire brushing. CAUTION Inspection The welds in these V-groove butt joints must be made as shown in the AWS welding symbol. The weld beads must be straight, with a convex shape and evenly spaced ripples. Each weld must have evidence of 100% penetration on the root side. All restarts should be made without low spots.
