you could serve fat-free milk. Pineapple
juice is a nutritious addition to a meal
lacking foods from the fruit group.
Tap water is a readily available, low-cost
beverage. You can also buy beverages.
Food stores sell fresh, canned, bottled,
and frozen beverages. Food stores also
sell beverage mixes, dried tea leaves, and
ground coffee beans. Purchased beverages
cost more than tap water.
Preparing Beverages
Most beverages need very little prepa-
ration. Tap water requires no preparation.
Just pour it in a glass and drink. Fresh,
canned, and bottled beverages also do not
need preparation. For instance, fresh milk,
freshly squeezed orange juice, canned iced
tea, and soft drinks are ready to drink when
you buy them.
Frozen beverages need some prepara-
tion. Frozen juices need to be mixed with
water. Frozen milk shakes have to be partly
thawed before serving.
Beverage mixes need to be blended
with a liquid, usually water. Iced tea mix,
lemonade mix, and fruit flavored drink
mixes are common mixes that are usually
blended with cold water. Instant coffee,
flavored coffee mix, and hot chocolate
mix are beverage mixes that are usually
blended with hot water. The directions on
the package tell you how much water to
add to the mix.
Most dried tea leaves are sold in a form
called tea bags. Tea bags are made by plac-
ing dried, chopped tea leaves in a thin bag.
Tea is prepared by soaking the tea bags in
hot water for a few minutes. The color and
flavor of the leaves dissolve and pass into
the water. The longer the tea bag is left in
the water, the darker the color and stronger
the flavor will be. Ground coffee beans are
used to brew coffee. When the beans are
soaked with hot water, their flavor and color
dissolve. This causes the water to become
dark brown and flavorful, 14-3.
