Beverages that are served cold can be
chilled in the refrigerator before serving. You
can keep them cold once they are served by
pouring them into ice-filled glassware. You
can make them extra cold by blending them
with ice in a blender. See 14-4.
Beverages that are served hot need to
be heated before they are served. You can
heat water, juices, and milk on the cooktop
or in a microwave oven. Hot beverages
are hot enough when tiny bubbles begin to
form and steam starts to form. They do not
need to boil. Heating milk requires extra
care. Chapter 20 describes how to heat
milk correctly.
Coffee is usually made in a coffee-
maker. The best coffee results when you
use cold water, fresh coffee, and a clean
coffeemaker. The directions that come with
the coffeemaker will tell you how much
coffee and water to use.
Storing Beverages
Fresh beverages should be kept in a
closed container in the refrigerator. Use
them within a week or so. Canned and
bottled beverages can be kept in a cool, dry
place for six months or longer. They also
can be stored in the refrigerator before they
are opened. Once opened, canned and
bottled beverages need to be kept refriger-
ated and used within a week or two. A
beverage mix stored in an airtight container
that is kept in a cool, dry place will maintain
its quality for a year or more. Leftover,
prepared beverage mixes should be stored
in the refrigerator. Tea bags and ground
coffee beans should be placed in airtight
containers and stored in a cool, dry place.
Snacks
What do you think of when you hear the
word snack? Many people only think of chips,
cookies, and candy. They don’t realize that
any food can be a snack. The snacks that
are the best choices are those that help you
meet your nutrient needs. You get the most
nutrients when your snacks come from a
variety of foods from the major food groups.
Many people enjoy snacks. Some
people eat snacks several times each day.
Most small children need snacks because
they can eat only small amounts of food at
each meal. Mid-morning, mid-afternoon,
and bedtime snacks can help children get
the nutrients they need. During your teen
years, you may need snacks, too. This
is because you are growing very rapidly.
