carbon steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. Aluminum
and other alloys can be welded using the SMAW
process, but better options are usually available. A big
advantage of the SMAW process is its adaptability.
Switching electrodes and making simple output
adjustments to the power source allows the welder to
perform a variety of welding tasks.
Equipment
The setup for SMAW consists of the welding
machine, electrode and workpiece welding leads, and
the consumable electrode.
Welding Machines
There are several common types of arc welding
machines or power sources, Figure 29-4. All machines
for SMAW are constant-current machines, which
means they provide an even supply of amperage to
the electrode.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding
Shielded h Metal Arc Welding is generally more
economical c om than other metal joinery methods
and n doe o es not require a lot of space. If you have
an n interest er in this process, you may be able to
purchas u a se the equipment needed to build metal
projects r s using this technique for a reasonable price.
Many backyard b BBQ grills, small utility trailers, and
artistic r c creations have been constructed by students
using s S SM AW.
As s you study this chapter, discuss with your
agriculture g t teacher the potential for beginning a
supervi u v is ed agricultural experience (SAE) program
that uses se arc welding equipment to create projects.
Estimat s a te the cost of the equipment and other items
needed e ed to create your welding projects and then
calculate a a the potential profit that can be generated
by y sell li n ng the items you create.
A w we lding-related SAE may lead to a profitable
career a r as you progress in skill and obtain your
welding e n g certification. Remember to document
your o investment nv of time and money to allow you
to accurately complete a proficiency ap pp lication.
Take full advantage of the opportunit ti es available e
in class and as an FFA member to advance a v in this
area. Experienced welders make a good g o living an nd
have the option of working at various s c co mpanies s, for
themselves, or a combination of both. h
