Ask the patient to sit in a comfortable position on a chair or table, hips and knees flexed at 90 degrees, and feet not touching the floor. 22. Ask the patient to place the left foot at 90 degrees to the leg (ankle in neutral position). 23. Place your hand under the bottom (sole) of the patient’s left foot. Provide a verbal cue for the patient to move the foot into plantar flexion. Apply resistance to the movement of the patient’s foot into plantar flexion (Figure 6.3D). Recall that the goal is to produce an isometric contraction of the gastrocnemius and soleus complex (calcaneal tendon). Perform this test for no more than 5 seconds. HINT Using common language such as “push on my hand as though it were a gas pedal” can be understood by patients of all ages. 24. Repeat the procedure on the patient’s other foot. 25. Record your observations. _ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 26.
