Chapter 1 Understanding Clothing 35 Climate Different climates create different clothing needs. In some areas, tempera- tures remain fairly warm all year. In these places, people do not give much thought to seasonal clothing. They can wear most of their clothes year-round. In other regions, people must have some clothing that is comfortable in warm weather and other clothes for cold weather. Because of seasonal clothing needs, people who live in these regions will probably spend more money for clothes than people in mild climates. For example, a winter coat is a major expense. Boots, hats, scarves, and gloves are additional expenses for people living in cold climates. In many regions, medium-weight clothing is appropriate for the climate. People can add extra sweaters and lightweight jackets to medium-weight gar- ments when days are cold. Several layers give more warmth than one heavy garment. The layers trap air between them which becomes warm from body heat. In some climates, a lightweight coat is all people need. One all-purpose coat with a heavy zip-out lining is a practical choice for those who live in a colder climate because they can wear it during fall, winter, and spring. The layered look is great for allowing people to adjust to different tem- peratures. It is a popular, attractive, and practical fashion for both males and females. Depending on the weather, you can combine shirts, sweaters, and jackets in several different ways, depending on the weather. What Is Most Flattering When making clothing decisions, people usually want to choose garments that make them look their best. Have you ever noticed that an outfi t you put on one day made you look taller? On another day, perhaps a friend said to you, “That color looks great on you.” Have you ever wondered why? The colors, garment styles, and accessories you choose can make a difference in how you look to yourself and others. 1-8 This couple is dressed for a special dance at school.
