Chapter 26 Basic Sewing Skills 461 • Stretch lace. Use stretch lace for medium and lightweight fabrics and knits. Because it stretches, it works well on curved hems. Lap it over the right side of the fabric ¼ inch and stitch it in place close to the edge of the lapped edge of the lace. Use a straight stitch for woven fabrics and a zigzag stitch for knits. • Bias tape. Use bias tape for fabrics that ravel a great deal. It is also good to use on circular or very full skirts. It is a bulky fi nish, so use it only on medium and heavyweight fabrics. Open one fold of the tape. With right sides together, sew in the tape crease to join the tape to the hem allowance. Turn the tape up and over the cut edge of the hem.
