Zippers
Zippers are available in various colors, types, and lengths. Like thread,
you need to match the color of the zipper to the fabric. Check your pattern
envelope for the type and length zipper you need. Zippers are available with
both nylon and metal teeth in various weights and thicknesses, 24-8. The zip-
per tapes may be made of cotton or manufactured fi bers. They may be fi rmly
woven or stretchable.
Different types of zippers have differ-
ent uses. These include the following:
All-purpose zippers are used most often.
They open only from the top.
Separating zippers can come apart at
the bottom. They are used on jackets
and parkas.
Invisible zippers look like regular
seams from the right side of the gar-
ment. No stitching is visible. The spe-
cial way they are sewn gives them this
appearance.
Two-way zippers have sliders at the top
and the bottom. They can be opened at
either end.
Trouser zippers have wider tapes and
teeth than other zippers. The teeth are
often made of brass.
Buttons
Buttons can be decorative or functional. The size and number of buttons
you need are listed on your pattern envelope. A button’s size is its diameter.
There are two common types of buttons:
Sew-through buttons have two to four holes in them. Thread is stitched
through the holes.
Shank buttons have a loop underneath the button. You stitch the thread
through the loop.
Hooks, Eyes, and Snaps
Hooks and eyes come in a variety of sizes. Regular hooks and eyes have
curved or straight eyes. Curved eyes are used on edges that just meet, such as
the edge of a collar. Straight eyes are used when edges overlap, such as on a
waistband. Trouser hooks and eyes are wider and fl atter.
Snaps also come in many sizes. Smaller snaps are used in areas with little
strain. Larger snaps can withstand heavy-duty use. They can be used covered
or uncovered depending on the garment, 24-9.
Hooks and eyes and snaps usually come in black and silver. Black is usu-
ally used on dark-colored fabrics. Silver is often used on light-colored fabrics.
24-8 Zippers come
in a variety of widths,
lengths, and colors.
The teeth may be
made of metal or
nylon.
