Hook-and-Loop Tape
Hook-and-loop tape is made up of two
pieces of nylon. One piece has tiny nylon
loops. The other has a fuzzy surface. When
the two pieces are pressed together, they
stick to one another. Hook-and-loop tape
may come in precut shapes such as circles
and squares. It is also available in strips by
the yard. A common brand of hook-and-
loop tape is Velcro®.
Tapes and Trims
Tapes and trims are available in a vari-
ety of types, widths, and colors. They may
be fi rmly woven or stretchable. The type
you choose depends on how you will use it.
Tapes and trims can be functional and
decorative. For instance, you can use color-
ful seam tape to fi nish hems and facing edges. Other colorful trims, such as
ribbon, lace, and braid, are made into designs to decorate garments. Tapes can
be used to cover fabric edges or reinforce seams to keep them from stretching.
A number of tapes and trims are available. They include the following:
Seam tape is a woven tape used to fi nish hem and facing edges.
Twill tape is a fi rm tape used to reinforce seams.
Bias tape is a single-fold or double-fold tape that stretches. Use it to bind
curved or straight edges or for casings and ties.
Hem facing is a wide type of bias tape used for hems and binding edges.
Piping is a corded bias strip that can be inserted into a seam for a decora-
tive effect.
Ribbing is a knitted band used for necklines, sleeves, or lower edges.
Check the package directions for how to use these tapes and trims and
how to apply them. Your pattern may tell you what type and how much to buy
for the garment you are making.
Elastics
Elastic is used to give better fi t to garments. It is available in different
widths and types. When buying elastic, check to make sure you get the kind
you need. Different types of elastics include the following:
Woven elastic can be used in a casing (an enclosure to hold elastic) because
it stays the same width when stretched. It can also be stitched directly to
a garment. It is usually thicker than other elastics so it is good to use with
heavier fabrics.
Braided elastic becomes narrow when it is stretched. It is only used in casings.
Knitted elastic is soft and lightweight. It resists curling when stretched. It
is best suited for lightweight fabrics and swimwear.
