xiii Focus on Illustrations The illustrations in the book were developed by coauthors Maggie Bergeron and Catherine Lee, with input from the rest of the author team. The intent was to provide personal and colorful visu- als to represent key concepts in the book and to model ways readers can interact with informa- tion in different modes. Note: In order for students to be able to fully engage with the content and activities in this text, the authors made the purposeful decision not to include photos, especially images of stu- dents. This will allow students to envision them- selves as they think about content, try out simple strategies, and reflect on concepts in their own words.
