Chapter 1 Architectural Styles 19
Foursquare
A foursquare house is simply a square house,
one- to two-and-one-half stories, divided into
four rooms per fl oor. Foursquare homes mim-
icked many different styles, but the Craftsman
foursquare was one of the most popular. See
Figure 1-20.
The Craftsman foursquare house was two-
to two-and-one-half stories high with a pyra-
midal, hipped roof. The roof often had wide
eaves and exposed gable ends with beams and
a large central dormer. The shape was square
with a simple, closed fl oor plan divided into
four rooms per fl oor. The facade was symmet-
rical with large double-hung windows, a large
front porch supported by square columns, and
wide stairs. The Craftsman foursquare could be
built with wood siding, brick, stone, stucco, or
concrete block.
