Chapter 1 Architectural Styles 31
Suggested Activities
1. Call on a local architect and ask the following
questions. Compose a brief report on the
architect’s responses.
A. What style of home is most in demand
today in your region?
B. Describe the educational requirements to
obtain a degree in architecture.
C. Describe the process to become a
registered architect with the American
Institute of Architects.
D. Describe the job description of an entry-
level design drafter in this company.
2. Using a variety of sources, develop an
architectural design folder illustrating as
many home styles as you can find. Indicate
on each home any design features that have
been borrowed from the past or demonstrate
a futuristic trend.
3. Visit a local residential construction
contractor and inquire about current building
materials and new environmentally friendly
building materials being used for exterior
structural features and sustainability. Ask for
an explanation of each product and how each
is used in construction. Make a list of these
materials and make an oral presentation of
your research to the class.
4. Select one of the architectural styles
described in this textbook. Cut out and glue
together a cardboard model of that design.
5. Find an example of mass media advertising
for homes in your area. Obtain a copy of the
ad. Attach the copy to the top of a sheet of
paper. Then analyze each claim made in the
ad. Below the ad, list further questions that
you would need to ask before you considered
buying a home from this builder or in this
community.
Problem Solving
Case Study
A new client has come to your architectural
office in Denver, Colorado, to discuss ideas for
her family’s new residence. She is moving to
Colorado from a rural area in southern Georgia
to take a new job. She has not yet decided
whether to build a home or buy an existing one.
The client is about 35 years old and has three
children, ages 9, 5, and 2.
When you ask about her family’s priorities,
she tells you that the home must be close to
good schools and daycare facilities. Although
her new job is downtown, she does not want to
live downtown because she thinks that would be
too big of a change for her children. She wants
a house with at least three bedrooms, with room
for expansion. Given this preliminary information,
answer the following questions.
1. What type of housing would you recommend
for this client?
2. What home style might be most suitable?
3. What further questions would you need
to ask the client to help narrow down the
choices?
