Curricular Connections
1. Social Science. Historically, culture has
played an important part in architectural
design. For example, one type of ancient
Chinese architecture reflects the cultural
belief that people are an integral part of
nature. Its distinguishing features include
simplicity and honesty in design. Research
cultural influences on each of the following
styles of architectural design.
Ancient Greek architecture
Chinese Siheyuan architecture
Gothic European architecture
Ancient Mayan temple architecture
Collect illustrations of each, and assemble
them into an illustrated multimedia
presentation. In your presentation, include
a summary section that compares and
contrasts these styles with contemporary
styles. Show your presentation to the class.
2. Language Arts. How much influence does
advertising have on the homes people
buy? Home builders often use billboards,
newspaper ads, television and radio
commercials, and even Internet sites to
promote their products. It is important to
realize that builders design these messages
specifically to persuade people to buy their
homes. Suppose you see a newspaper ad
that contains the following claims for a new
housing community:
Near parks and recreational facilities
Great schools
Low utilities
Prices starting at $150,000!
Think critically about these claims. What do
these things really tell you? What further
questions would you need to ask before
deciding to live in the community?
STEM Connections
1. Engineering. The original English Tudor
home style used half-timbering as a structural
element. In the Tudor Revival style, however,
the half-timbering was decorative, not
structural. Investigate the structural elements
of these two styles. What engineering
advances allowed the Tudor Revival style
to use half-timbering for decoration only?
What supported the walls and roofs in Tudor
Revival homes?
Communicating about
Architecture
1. Speaking and Listening. Working in small
groups, create a poster that illustrates
different architectural styles. Add labels to
identify the different features that distinguish
each style from the others. Afterward,
display your posters in the classroom as a
convenient reference aid for discussions and
assignments.
2. Speaking and Listening. Working in groups,
use the same posters you previously created
or similar posters, this time without the labels.
Use these posters to quiz one another about
the architectural styles they represent. As
you present each style, use a one-sentence
description to summarize the main features of
that particular style.
