Using the CHAMFER Command U s ing the CHAMFER Comm a nd
In design and drafting terminology, a chamfer is a small, angled surface used to
relieve a sharp corner. The
CHAMFER
command allows you to draw an angled corner
between intersecting and nonintersecting lines, polylines, xlines, and rays. Determine
the size of a chamfer based on the distance from the corner. A 45° chamfer is the same
distance from the corner in each direction. See Figure 11-4. Typically, two distances or
one distance and one angle identify the size of a chamfer. For example, a value of
.5
for
both distances produces a .5 × 45° chamfer.
Setting Chamfer Distances
Access the
CHAMFER
command and then use the Distanceoption to specify the chamfer
distances from a corner. You must set chamfer distances before you select objects. AutoCAD
stores the distances as the new defaults, allowing you to place additional chamfers of the
same size. Once you defi ne the distances, select the fi rst object and then hover the pick box
over the second object to preview the operation. The
Distance
option, available after you pick
the fi rst object, provides another chance to modify the distances before drawing the chamfer.
If the preview looks acceptable, pick the second object to apply the chamfer. See Figure 11-5.
Setting the Chamfer Angle
Use the
Angle
option as an alternative to setting two chamfer distances. Specify
the chamfer distance along the fi rst selected object, followed by the chamfer angle.
Then select the objects to chamfer. See Figure 11-6. AutoCAD stores the distance and
angle settings as the new defaults, allowing you to place additional chamfers of the
same size. The
Angle
option, available after you pick the fi rst object, provides another
chance to modify the distance and angle before drawing the chamfer.
Method Option
AutoCAD maintains the specifi ed chamfer distances and the distance and
angle until you change the values. You can set the values for each method without
affecting the other. Use the
Method
option to toggle between drawing chamfers using
the
Distance
and
Angle
options. The
Method
option, available after you pick the fi rst
object, provides another chance to modify the method before drawing the chamfer.
PROFESSIONAL TIP P R OFESSIONAL TIP
Use the
CHAMFER
command to form sharp corners by specifying chamfer distances
or an angle and distance of 0. An alternative is to hold down

when you pick the
second object.

Examples of chamfers. An alternative way to dimension a chamfer is to specify the angle by
the size, such as
.125
× 45° for the
.125
× .125, or 45°, chamfer shown.
