Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Chapter 4 Understanding Three-Dimensional Coordinates and User Coordinate Systems 85 The UCS command is used to create and manage UCSs. The quickest method of working with the UCS icon and the UCS command is to use the UCS icon shortcut menu and grip menus. Using this method will save you several steps and is described in this section. The UCS command and its options can be accessed on the Coordinates panel of the Home and Visualize tabs on the ribbon or by typing the command. Three selections in the ribbon provide access to all UCS options. These selections are intro- duced here and discussed in detail later in this chapter. • UCS. Picking this button executes the UCS command. This command allows you to create a named UCS and provides access to all of the command options. The UCS command can also be selected by picking on the UCS drop-down list below the view cube. All of the command options are covered later in this chapter. • Named UCS Combo Control. This drop-down list contains the six orthographic UCS options, which are covered later in this chapter. Any saved UCSs will be listed here, too. • UCS, Named UCS. Picking this button displays the UCS dialog box. The three tabs in the dialog box contain a variety of UCS and UCS icon options and settings. These options and settings are described as you progress through the chapter. The UCS Icon Shortcut Menu and Grip Menus Creating and managing user coordinate systems is described in detail later in this chapter, but this is an introduction to a quick and dynamic method of working with the UCS and the UCS icon. Many of the functions associated with managing the UCS and the UCS icon can be accomplished using the UCS icon shortcut menu. Grip menus are also available when the UCS icon is selected. The origin grip menu is useful for moving the UCS origin or realigning its orientation. For example, to move the UCS to the base of the wedge in Figure 4-7A, fi rst select the UCS icon, then place the pointer over the UCS icon origin grip. Hover over the grip, but do not select it. The grip menu displays three options. Select Move Origin Only, then use an object snap to move the UCS origin to the base of the wedge. See Figure 4-7B. To align a new UCS with the face of an object, select the icon and pick Move and Align. See Figure 4-8A. Then drag the icon to the face of the object. The alignment of the UCS icon depends on which edge of the face the pointer is moved over. In Figure 4-8B, the pointer is fi rst moved over the pointed end of the wedge.
