Chapter 15 Transmission and Transaxle In-Vehicle Service 383
bore. If the valves must be removed, remove them one at a
time. Valves can be cleaned and polished. If a valve body
cannot be restored by light polishing and cleaning, it should
be replaced.
To remove a case-mounted governor, remove the gov-
ernor cover and slide the governor from the case. A shaft-
mounted governor can be removed by first removing the
tailshaft housing. Governors can be checked for sticking
valves, missing return springs, and stripped driven gears.
Most modulators can be removed by removing the attaching
bolt and pulling the modulator from the case. Check the
modulator for a leaking diaphragm or a bent neck.
Most fluid leaks can be corrected by replacing the
defective part. Common transmission and transaxle sealing
parts include seals, O-rings, and gaskets.
An external oil cooler can be added to reduce fluid
temperatures. Generally, the parts included in the cooler
package provide for easy installation.
Review Questions—Chapter 15
Answer the following questions using the information
provided in this chapter.
1. A valve body can be serviced without removing the
_____.
(A) oil pan
(B) transmission
(C) filter
(D) Both A and B.
2. Problems resulting from an overfilled transmission are
_____ (the same as/different than) those resulting from
an under filled transmission.
3. What can be learned from studying the condition of
the transmission/transaxle fluid?
4. When adjusting shift linkage of an automatic trans-
mission or transaxle, you must make sure the position
of the outer manual lever is synchronized with that of
the _____ _____ lever.
5. Which of the following can be used to help identify
the type of transmission or transaxle being serviced?
(A) Shape of the bottom pan.
(B) Builder plates or labels.
(C) Location of external parts.
(D) All of the above.
6. When used, the _____ may be held to the case with a
bolt. Some versions screw into the _____.
7. Which of the following can be replaced after remov-
ing the oil pan?
(A) Valve body.
(B) Modulator.
(C) Filter.
(D) Both A and C.
8. When polishing valve lands, avoid rounding the
_____.
9. Which of the following parts is sometimes installed
under the valve body?
(A) Modulator.
(B) Servo.
(C) Governor.
(D) Filter.
10. When installing a pan or cover with many fasteners,
start tightening the fasteners in the _____ and work
_____.
ASE-Type Questions—Chapter 15
1. Technician A says that a malfunctioning automatic
transmission always requires a complete overhaul.
Technician B says that contaminated transmission
fluid can cause rapid part wear and premature failure.
Who is right?
(A) A only.
(B) B only.
(C) Both A and B.
(D) Neither A nor B.
2. Technician A says that the fluid level in an automatic
transaxle is more sensitive to temperature than the
fluid level in an automatic transmission. Technician B
says that transaxle fluid level may be affected by
whether the shift lever is in neutral or park. Who is
right?
(A) A only.
(B) B only.
(C) Both A and B.
(D) Neither A nor B.
3. Technician A says that some automatic transaxles
have a separate reservoir for the differential lubricant.
Technician B says that the most accurate check of the
transaxle fluid level is made just before starting a
vehicle that has been parked overnight. Who is right?
(A) A only.
(B) B only.
(C) Both A and B.
(D) Neither A nor B.
